Social Networking for Your Business

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, I’m sure you have realized that social networking sites are the hot new thing and are definitely here to stay. If you are looking to start your own business from home or expanding that business, site like Facebook, Brightfuse and LinkedIn are the perfect places to meet and greet with just the right business people without leaving the house.

When looking at your profile, or creating it from the beginning, it’s important to keep potential business contacts in mind. Business contacts are looking to understand you more and to look beyond your website or even what might be in your resume. They can learn about your culture, interests and even your professionalism.

Here are some things to keep in mind when polishing up that perfect profile for networking.

Photographs.
While it is necessary to have a picture of yourself on your profile, choosing the right one can be tricky. Don’t go overboard on paying hundreds of dollars to get overly done "glamour" pictures of yourself. Don’t use a picture of you from high school; age and experience go a long way in these circles. Use a real picture of yourself where you look nice, pleasant and like a real person. Although pictures of your family, you on trips or other more personal photographs can be a great plus, it is important to choose those photos carefully. It is very important to remember: do not under any circumstances post pictures of yourself or even your friends partying, drinking, doing drugs or anything else that the average person would consider inappropriate. This is a sure fire way to get yourself a bad name very quickly.

Posting Comments or Blogs.
Having a blog about what is going on in your business, family news or even charity work that you are doing can be a wonderful addition to your profile. Always remember to spell check things before posting them. You don’t want to get passed over for potential business because your blog postings are sloppy in the way of spelling or grammar. Also, be careful what, and more importantly, who you talk about. Many business people like to keep their business networkings private. More importantly, do not ever air your grievances, rumors or any kind of "dirty laundry" on your profile. You may be justified in your anger, but take the high road and do not post things on your profile. Remember that once you have posted something, it is impossible to take it back.

Joining groups.
One of the best parts about these social networking sites is the ability to join virtual groups that are very simple and effective ways to find like minded people that could carry a lot of business potential. However, be careful which groups you join. "Marketers in Indiana" or "I own my own small business’ are great groups to start or join. "I don’t remember my weekends" or "People suck" are probably not the best groups to join. It can show a lack of maturity and professionalism.

Social networking is a fun way to make those business connections that are so important. Even if you aren’t looking for a business partner, you can find support and inspiration for the tough times that everyone incurs from time to time when running their own business. With some careful editing and thoughtful posts, you can create an online look into who you really are and how great your business is.
